Small Edwards Globe Valves
Problem
Edwards Model 848Y small globe valves were initially manufactured with extremely deep stuffing boxes with room for 8 rings of packing. In order to remain leak free the 8 rings of packing needed tremensous stud torque often rendering the valve inoperable.
Solution
Prior to AP Style 5010 hardened carbon bushings, the only solution was to accept poor valve performance or to machine a metal spacer because an AP Style 5005 bushing did not have adequate strength for the small 1/4" cross section. Newer Model 848Y globe valves have a shorter stuffing box than their predecessors. To further increase operability and sealability, use a 4 ring set with an AP Style 5010 hardened carbon bushing. The reduced number of sealing rings combined with a 5010 carbon bushing will allow cycling under an ideal 4000psi packing stress.
