Repacking Borg Warner Threaded Gland Valves

Problem

Small Borg Warner valves with a single threaded gland follower are difficult to pack. The threads at the top of the stuffing box can easily damage packing while it is being installed, cause eventual failure of the packing set. In addition a step at the end of threaded portion of the stuffing box, makes it extremely difficult to slide the packing rings into the bottom of the stuffing box without damage.

Solution

In an effort to eliminate any packing problems on 1” Borg Warner valves with a single gland nut, the following guidelines should be followed when repacking, retorquing or inspections on walkdowns.

  • Valve requires less than three threads showing on gland nut before it starts compressing packing.
  • Gland will completely bottom out with approximately 1/2 nut(flats) visible.
  • There is 7/8 inch of threads on follower.
    • The nose on the follower is 3/8 inch long.
    • The inside ledge of the box is 1 inch down from the top of the box.
    • The use of a packing guide is required for packing installations. (see attached photo)
    • Threads should be well lubricated.
    • Torque packing gland nut to 40 ft/lbs.

A simple tool as pictured above, fits easily into the stuffing box, covering the stuffing box threads, and lines up with the step in the box to make a smooth transition into the bottom of stuffing box, preventing packing damage.
