Leakage on Masoneilan Model Varipack 2800 Air Operated Valves
Problem
Small Masoneilan Model Varipack 2800 valves have had chronic valve packing leaks. Due to the unique and limited size of the valve air operator, very little packing load can be accommodated. Valve is typically intended for low temperature service and in applications where the valve packing can be easily attended to. If installed in high temperature, remote/inaccessible locations special attention to valve packing selection is necessary to obtain “leak-free” service. Vendor instructions typically recommend to tighten packing loosely and retighten when placed in service so as “just to stop the leakage”.
Solution
Repack with AP Style 5718 set including end rings of AP Style 5000 with graphite washers. Due to the lower friction of the AP Style 5718, the packing torque can be increased to allow for adequate loading of the valve packing while still allowing the small air operator to properly stroke. Obtaining 2500psi packing load at 42 in-lbs of torque.
