Wire Reinforced Packing Can Lead To Stem Scoring Damage
Problem
Exposed Inconel wire jacket wedged between the valve body and stem was pulled into the flow stream and caused severe stem scoring damage.
Solution
Wire-jacketed reinforced packing is not recommended in valves due to the risk of stem scoring. Common graphite packing systems (with no wire) pose no risk.
