Use of Spray Adhesive to Position Gaskets on Flange Faces

Problem

One challenge of installing gaskets is fitting the gasket in place on flat faced flanges. This is especially difficult on vertical positioned flanges where there are no bolt holes to help center the gasket on the flange.

Solution

AP Services recommends using a light coating spray of 3M Super 77 Spray adhesive to support and position the gasket on vertical flanges. The 3M Super 77 has been approved at nuclear facilities because it has been tested and shown to contain low halogens. What must NOT be used is any grease or anti-seize products, or RTV, as these products have been known to cause gasket failure when used together.
