Uncontrollable Leakage on Condensate Pumps at a BWR Nuclear Plant
Problem
OEM Packing used in Flowserve Condensate Pumps at a BWR nuclear plant had uncontrollable leakage.
Solution
AP Services recommended a new material and installation practice resulting in very minimal leakage and unprecedented longevity while still allowing the pump shaft to run cool. New packing configuration consisted of Style 7300/300, 3 rings below the lantern ring and 2 rings above with Style 300 washers between all the packing rings. New installation practice consisted of pre-compressing the bottom set to a specified stress.
