Relay Valve Gasket Leakage on Coolant Injection System

Problem

Flange gaskets on coolant injection relay valve leaked at a Nuclear Power Plant. Original Vegetable Fiber Paper gaskets over-crushed easily and water wicked through the cellulose fibers. Temperature was 125 deg F, Pressure 100 PSI.

Solution

The use of Garlock Multi-Swell 3760 prevented leakage in this application. Style 3760 exhibits greater crush resistance and is non-wicking unlike traditional vegetable fiber gaskets.
