Machining an Angle in Carbon Bushings to Match the Angle at the Bottom of the Stuffing Box.

Problem

A carbon bushing is used to take up space in a stuffing box while also provide stem support and alignment. Carbon bushings can be susceptible to cracking if placed directly over a stuffing box bottom that is tapered. Placing a braided “junk ring” underneath the bushing will prevent damage but is not desirable due to added packing friction and the possibility of ring degradation and additional consolidation over time.

Solution

The preferred solution is to machine one side of the bushing to match the angle at the bottom of the box. Utilizing a graphite washer, Style 6200N, underneath the tapered side of the bushing is also good practice.
