Gore Series ePTFE Tape on the Bearing Thrust Housing Flange at a Hydro Electric Station
Problem
At a Hydro Electric Station, the bearing thrust housing flange is a difficult application to seal and takes excessive time and manpower to install the gaskets. Due to the large size and irregular shape of the flange cover, a large amount of scrap material is wasted, and typically takes 3-4 people to install the gasket. The original flange gasket is most commonly a nitrile rubber material.
Solution
Due to the urgency to get the application sealed and back into operation with minimal maintenance personnel, AP Services recommended using Gore 300 Series Tape. Gore 300 tape is a form-in-place gasket tape made of 100% expanded PTFE. The tape was installed by one person in about 20 minutes. With the tape having self-adhesion on one side, this eliminated most the problems associated with keeping the original full-faced nitrile rubber gasket in place during flange bolt-up sequences. Gore Series Tape is chemically inert, temperature resistant, highly conformable, resists creep and cold flow, and has superior sealing reliability. Using the Gore Series Tape successfully saved time and manpower, and has been leak free for several months now.
