Gasket Leaks on MSR Manways

Problem

Due to inadequate load on the OEM spiral wound gasket persistent leaks occurred. Application consisted of a 18”x24” oval spiral wound gasket, at operating pressure of 200psi, temperature 388°F. Original OEM gasket was 13/16” wide. The Manway yoke with 2 studs did not generate enough load to seal the gasket, so it was actually seated by internal pressure, but at the low operating pressure insufficient force was produced for adequate seal load.

Solution

Specify a Low Stress Spiral Wound Gasket (LS Style) with inner and outer guide rings. Reduce the gasket area to achieve a higher gasket stress by reducing the sealing width of the gasket.
