Gasket Leaks on Hydrogen Seal Oil Flanges
Problem
Oil Leaks on flanges for the Hydrogen Seal Oil for the generator were common at a nuclear plant. Seal Oil is important for the lubrication of the generator shaft. Original vegetable fiber gaskets weeped oil. Gylon Style 3510 gaskets also failed due to the material hardness. Pressure is 50 psi. Flange Sizes range from 2.5 Inch to 4 Inch (raised face flanges)
Solution
The use of Garlock Multi-Swell 3760 proved to be successful in this application. The 3760 material is a highly compressible sheet capable of sealing at low bolt loads. Its ability to swell in oil media creates additional compressive load on the gasket leading to a tighter seal than many compressed sheet gaskets exhibit on the market today.
