Freon-22 Chiller Flange Gasket
Problem
A customer was using a refrigerant grade neoprene gasket on the bell end for a chiller. The media was Freon-22 and also had some oil in the mixture. The chiller had tubes of sulfuric acid running on the inside of the chiller. The material has to also be compatible with sulfuric acid in case there was a leak. The gasket was extremely intricate with 3 odd shaped ribs. The original neoprene gasket was tearing due to the low tensile strength of the material and the thin cross section of the ribs. The flanges were old and not in great shape and there were some concerns if the neoprene would seal.
Solution
AP Services offered Gore Power Grade. The material has an excellent rating with the Freon-22/oil mixture and is also chemically inert to the sulfuric acid. The conformability of the material and higher tensile strength also aided in a leak free seal without the gasket tearing.
