Flange Gasket on Moisture Separator Drain Tank

Problem

Gasket failure occurred on a Moisture Separator Drain Tank Flange at nuclear power plant. The combination of imperfect flange surfaces, high vibration, and insufficient load for the spiral wound gasket were main contributors to the failure. Media is steam and hot water. Temperature is 385 Deg F. Pressure is 215 psig.

Solution

Style 6500 flexible graphite sheet provided a gasket that conformed very well to flange surface imperfections and sealed at a lower bolt load than spiral wound gaskets.
