Feedwater Regulating Valve Packing
Problem
Actuator stem to valve stem misalignment was observed on Feedwater Regulating Valves. This misalignment can cause packing leaks. Larger packing cross-sections that are associated with these valves can lead to undesired packing friction which causes poor valve performance.
Solution
Issues with stem misalignment were addressed by adding top and bottom carbon bushings to the packing set. Carbon Bushings act to center the stem in the stuffing box and to accommodate side-loading so that they are not imposed on the packing rings. Packing friction was reduced by using a 3 or 4 ring set of Style 5000 with graphite washers. An optimized live-load system is also recommended due to the high cycling normally associated with these valves. The combination of the above greatly improved Feed Water Reg Valve performance at several sites.
